The history of timekeeping dates back 5,000-6,000 years ago in which, according to some accounts, has been initiated in the Middle East and North Africa. To have a clear vision of the first clock was developed, let us first understand the characteristics of one. According to experts it has been defined as a device with dual qualities. First, it is a device that performs regular, constant, or repetitive process or action to mark off equal increments of time. Second, it is a means of keeping track of the increments of time, while displaying the result.
The Egyptians were the first group of people that have reasonably proven to have taken timekeeping seriously as a culture. They have used many media to approximately tell time during their time, including the sun, the stars, and then water. Greek and Roman horologists (people who professionally deal with time-keeping apparatus) and astronomers have quickly developed a more elaborate and impressive mechanised water clocks. The first mechanical clock, however, was believed to be invented in medieval Europe in which clever arrangements of wheels and gears were devised that turned by weights attached to them. More and more inventions have followed, while hundreds of trials and errors have been accounted for. Many inventors have passed the knowledge and principles of clock-making from one generation to the next. Galileo, Huygens, Clement, and Graham are just a few of the ancient scientists who have made their marks and have been the blueprint for the modern innovations in clockworks.
Today, the industry has made timepieces just as the fathers of modern clock architecture have developed. There are different types of clocks and watches that have now been introduced in the market. Genuine as well as low quality watches have graced people with different designs and craftsmanship to choose from. They can be classified by the type of time display and by the method of timekeeping, as well. Designing of smaller clocks or watches were intended to be worn on the wrists in order to have a more convenient movement of the person using it. Manufacturers have kept their products as compact as possible year after year to fit the requirements of every user. As these are used in a variety of ways, developers have also gained the knowledge on how they would respond to such demands by creating the exact product that consumers require.
